Fake Planks

I am so excited about today’s post because this project literally had me jumping up and down with excitement. I have planked my bedroom wall . . . . . with a Pencil!!!

Yup, I drew my planks on with a pencil, and you know what? You almost can’t even tell, my wall actually looks like it is lined with wood planks.

Plank walls are all the rave these days. It seems like so many designers, bloggers, and DIY’ers are adding them to their homes. Plank walls add so much character and charm to a space.

I just love the look of them so much, but being that I’m not much of a handymanwoman, the idea of adding planks to my walls by myself seemed like too much work. I don’t even own a saw, and not to mention I’m terrible at measuring angles, and so I gave up on the dream of having plank walls.

And then out of nowhere I thought to myself, “what if I tried drawing lines on the wall, could that give me the look I want?”

So I got out my leveler, a ruler, and a sharp pencil, and I started drawing lines on my wall.

I messured my lines to be 6 inches apart.  I used the leveler to make sure the lines were straight, and then I ran my pencil down the leveler to create the lines.

I had to sharpen my pencil approximately 10 times, so having an electric pencil sharpener nearby came in really handy. I also made my pencil marks thicker in some spots and lighter in others.  I think that’s where the illusion comes in, it makes the lines look like actual spaces between planks.

Once I had my lines drawn on, I lightly blotted on some sealer to keep the pencil lead from smearing. I made sure to just get the sealer on top of the lines, and then using a wet paper towel, I cleaned up any sealer that was outside of the lines. Otherwise the sealer could have been noticeable once dried.

I also did some paint touch ups, mostly because the leveler had made a lot of marks on the wall.

The fresh paint also gave it a nice clean finished look.

By the way, the color of my walls is called, Subway Tile, by Valspar.

I then brought in my newly painted bed and dressed it in all-white bedding.

I’ll share more of the bed in my next post.

So What do you think?

Will you be adding some Fake Planks to your walls?

Thanks for stopping by,

Emily

* Update: I have fake-planked our dining room, and did something a little bit different this time, so be sure to check it out!

That's pretty impressive. From the pictures you really wouldn't be able to tell! Plus when you decide you're tired of them you will have a lot easier time "removing" your planks than if they were real. I think that's a win-win!

Emily, this is genius! And I have a feeling we may be seeing a lot more of this:). Trend setter alert happening here!

Oh my gosh! You're a genius! I had no idea when I clicked through to your post that it was going to be so simple to get planked walls.

What I luv about this entire idea… you can change your mind with a few rolls of a roller and paint. YEAH!!!

Love the idea, it looks so real. Will you be changing the light fixture? Maybe a small chandelier would be pretty.

Love it, that would look so good on my wall behind my bed. But I have to be the language police, it's a level, not a leveler.

I saw a similar idea recently that involved using a Sharpie. I like this idea better. I agree with the other commenters–when planked walls become oh-so-2015, you can hop on the newest trend with a paintbrush.

I was wondering how I was going to break the news to my husband that I wanted a plank wall in our guest bath and guest bedroom, when we are in the middle of doing board and batten walls in our bedroom and main entry. You may have saved our marriage!

Emily, I just came across your post. This is so darn clever…It took me back to the days I used to watch Christopher Lowell (wonder whatever happened to him) and he was infamous for doing Trompe L'oeil. I want to "plank" my craft room but I don't relish the wrath of my husband when he sees how many holes I'd be making in the wall! This is doable!!

What a great idea for people who are in an apartment where the expense is an issue or the nail holes are prohibited. If the wallboard is up and in good shape and you have no idea where the studs are – this is a no-brainer!

I have been looking for ages for an easiest faux plank wall and found you while looking at cityfarmhouse.com/category/project-gallery and there you were with "9 Calming Colors at The Wicker House", which lead me to your plank wall link.

How is your handiwork holding up? Anything you would do differently? Did you add vertical lines later on?

I am falling for this idea big time. An update on how the lines are holding would be very welcome. Thank you!

I wonder how this would be in a powder room? Since it is a much smaller room, would it appear to be 'less realistic' looking? Our PR has ceramic tile walls (1/2 way up the wall) and I've been looking for something to finish it off.
